Ray defines two types of writing. There is writing to live and writing to convey feeling. Writing to live is typically systematic and guided. Writing to convey feeling is much more introspective, difficult and time consuming. Writing across the curriculum is not necessarily genuine writing that fosters a deep connection to the process of writing. Instead, writing across the curriculum is done for the purpose of showing knowledge of content in order to receive a grade that judges individual writing. Meaningful writing comes from practicing, coaching, and developing a true interest in the art.
